Dental Insurance

Being offered dental insurance by your employer along with the rest of your health benefits generally means that you are in a good position. Often, employers will offer dental insurance separately from the rest of the benefits package or not at all. If your employer offers dental insurance, by all means, take it because it is the best dental insurance that you will find.

Employers are able to get the best dental coverage plans because they are able to offer the insurance company higher premiums. This is because the employee pays a portion of the premium, and the rest is paid by the employer. Multiply this by several employees, taking into account that with corporations there could be literally thousands of employees, and the insurance company will be receiving high premiums each month for dental insurance.

So insurance companies offer large corporations excellent rates on their dental insurance and other insurance policies because they know the overall contract will be large. Having multiple employees to offer multiple premiums enables employers to provide their employees better dental insurance than they would be able to get on their own.

A good example of this is MetLife dental insurance. They base their dental insurance on a group dental plan, meaning the rate is based on the fact that there will be a large number of people on the plan. It’s a PDP, a preferred dentist program, meaning employees with this dental insurance plan choose their dental care providers from a list that have agreed to the terms. When joining the MetLife dental network, dentists agree to offer discounted benefits to anyone on the dental insurance plan, which can be up to as much as 35%. Dentists are also monitored to ensure that all patients are receiving quality care.

Many employers split the cost of the dental insurance plan with their employees. With this, employees have affordable dental insurance benefits, which are a cut above individual dental insurance policies, for the same or less cost than an individual dental insurance policy. When someone covered by this type of dental insurance goes to the dentist, a portion of all bills will be paid by the insurance company, with a co-payment due from the insured patient. All of this is superior to a dental insurance discount program, which only offers discounted dental care.

Another reason that having employment that offers dental insurance is advantageous is because of the law. Few states have laws regulating dental insurance discount plans. Consumers and patients can be easily conned or robbed of their money by unscrupulous dental insurance discount plans, which promise affordable dental insurance, but do not actually provide it.

When taking on dental insurance benefits from an employer, an employee can rest assured that this dental insurance is legal and on the level. Most states have laws regulating the insurance business and this includes dental insurance.

As with any other insurance policy, make sure you understand the dental insurance policy you are being offered in order to take full advantage of it.
